Favorite Scripture

Legend has it that Howard Thurman, an African American theologian, prayed the same verse of scripture every day:

“How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! I try to count them – they are more than the sand;” (Psalm 139:17-18a)

Everyday, year after year, he prayed using that same verse of scripture. He said that he found new meaning in it each time and that the prayer felt new everyday. It was his favorite scripture – the one he drew the most meaning from. The one that propelled him when he needed a push and the one which provided grounding when he needed stability.

What is your favorite scripture? What one do you find endless meaning in? What verse or verses both comfort and afflict you? Do you have one? Have you considered one before?

Mine? Mark 5:34 – “Jesus said to her, ‘Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”
