“No one after lighting a lamp hides it under a jar, or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. For nothing is hidden that will not be disclosed, nor is anything secret that will not become known and come to light. Then pay attention to how you listen; for to those who have, more will be given; and from those who do not have, even what they seem to have will be taken away.”
Luke 8:16-18
There is so much going at on First Congregational. The church’s long history of inspirational worship, commitment to social justice, fantastic music, and wonderful community is still very much alive today. In fact, our enthusiasm for shared ministry is growing. This is a time of great excitement and we are all wondering what we can do to help spread the word and welcome in new friends.
This question was discussed at length at our recent strategic planning session. Everyone in attendance was in agreement that a renewed effort to share what is happening at First Congo was needed. To that end, a strategic priority we are calling “Shining Our Light” was decided upon. This is strategic work to share with the wider SE Minnesota community, particular in the Winona area, what is happening within the church and how people can join. Our brand-new website is a great start! It is still a work in progress and will only get better as time goes on. Check back often to see what is new. We are also posting with more intention on our Facebook page and have created an Instagram account. Additional advertisements for special services and events will be placed in the local papers. All of this, will help our light shine!
What can you do to help? Well, share social media posts, tell people about our website, point out ads in the paper. Most importantly, you can tell the people in your lives all about what is happening at our church. Tell them what is exciting, new, what is making you think, and how being a part of vibrant worshipping community is making your life fuller. And, crucially, invite them to attend worship with you. That is the most vital and successful technique to growing a church. So, spread the word wide and help us to shine our light!
